The
Quilt Chart view is an interactive
Charts category view addon that presents your family tree in the form of a grid. Quilts allow the visualization of large genealogies up to several thousand individuals, by using a diagonally-filled matrix, where rows are individuals and columns are nuclear families.

Usage
From the
Charts category view select the
Quilt Chart icon or select View > Quilt Chart from the menu.
Key to chart
Reading the Quilt chart.
- Rows are individual people.
- Before the persons name
- A gender symbol is shown. eg: ♂ male, ♀ female, O Unknown
- Also a burial cross symbol ✝ is shown if the person has a death record attached.
- Person records are the shown in the following colors that mean: (color changeable from Edit>Preferences>Color tab)
- blue - selected person (configurable in Quilt Chart options)
- light blue - male
- pink - female
- orange - unknown gender
- Before the persons name
- Columns are nuclear families.
- Families are marked with an F
- Each Group of people separated by the families line (marked with an F) are of the same generation.
- A solid square ■ in the individuals row column means:
- The persons father (above them)
- A sibling in the same generation grouping
- If they have children (below them)
- A solid circle ⬤ the individuals row column means:
- The persons mother (above them)
- A sibling in the same generation grouping
- If they have children (below them)
- An empty individuals row column:
- Above the person means no parents
- Below the person means no children
- Not part of that family.
- Drawn path shown in red highlights that persons ancestors and descendants (Color and path transparency configurable in Quilt Chart options)
Available actions
Move the mouse hover people
One path is drawn for the person below the mouse dynamically; unless the Center the selected person option is not selected.
Move the mouse hover families
One tooltip with the family name is shown below the mouse dynamically; unless the Center the selected person option is not selected.
Click on one person
One path is drawn for the selected person unless the Center the selected person option is not selected then the path is drawn when you move the mouse and hover over the person
With the left button
The selected Person context menu is displayed that shows:
- [Persons name]
- Edit
- Edit tags
- Copy
- Spouses
- Siblings
- Children
- Parents
- Related
- Set as home person

With the right button
Selecting a persons name will show the Person Editor dialog.
Click on one family
Shown as the letter F on the chart.
With the left button
The selected Family context menu is displayed that shows:
- Family of [spouse 1] and [spouse 2]
- Edit - opens the Edit family dialog
- Edit tags - opens the Tag editor
- Children - expands to a list of children that you can select from.

With the right button
Selecting a family (shown as the letter F) will open the Family Editor dialog.
Quilt Chart toolbar
The Quilt Chart toolbar shows the search bar , a Clear button and filter message label.
On main Gramps Toolbar
On the main Gramps Toolbar you also have the:
- ⎙(Print...) button.
- Configure Options icon for the Quilt Chart.
The search bar
When you have a big tree, it is difficult to find a person. The search bar is used to select people and show the filtered name(s) in a drop down results list. Tooltip Select the name for which you want to see.
In the Search entry field you can:
- Use lower case to search
and
- Selecting a person from the results list will make that person Active and move the chart to them.
The Clear button
The Clear button is used to reset the entry field for the drop down menu and also shows a message about the active filtered name. Clear the entry field in the name selection box.
The message
On the label string, you have three values :
- The first one is the number of the selected persons. The lower this number is, the smaller will be the list.
- The second one is the number of people show on the tree. This number depends on the active person.
- The third and last is the number of people in the current database.

Configure Options
Select View > Configure... from the menu to change the following:
General options tab:
- Center the selected person. The new position will be near the top left corner (checkbox selected by default). If this option is selected, you don't see the paths and you have no tooltips when hover families.
- The path color:
red(default) selecting the color box brings up the Pick a color dialog. - The selected person color:
blue(default) selecting the color box brings up the Pick a color dialog. - The path transparency: slider that defaults to 6 out of (1 to 9).
Issues

- 0011967 When the "Family tree" is Closed : everything does not disappear
- When you select "Family trees" "Close" button the Quilt Chart continues to display the family tree but selecting anybody gives an error and then when Gramps restarts you are shown the "Gramps had a problem the last time it was run" would you like to run the check and repair tool!
