References

References play a key role in how Gramps identifies relationships between records and objects.

Definition

References are the basic a system of linking relationships between objects in Gramps. When when an object is added in the Editor for record, a Reference (link) is created in the object that was added.

The extensive system of linking between objects in Gramps. When objects of Gramps are linked, the References tab lists the objects to link toward it.

Using the References tab

The References tab lists the places where the current object (such as a specific Note, Citation, Person, Family, etc.) has been shared to another object. Double-clicking a row in the Reference list (or clicking the Edit icon with a row selected) will open the Editor for that object. New references cannot be directly created in the tab.

Viewing References

Fig .1 Quick View vs. Gramplet vs. Quick View Gramplet

There are several different methods for viewing the References data outside of the normal References tab interface. Each offers different benefits... and disadvantages if used inappropriately.

The screen capture to the left shows a stack of three views of the References for a Repository that have been layered together.

  • The Quick View (bordered in yellow) is opened from a contextual pop-up menu. The view is a static one. Once the Quick View window is opened for viewing, another record's Quick View can be opened for comparison in juxtaposition. The fact that that these Views are static allows hem to be used as a ToDo list without the confusion of constant context changes causing disorientation.
  • The References gramplet (bordered in red) was added in a Gramplet split screen section (whether sidebar or bottombar) of the Repository category View. And then the title tab is grabbed and dragged off that Gramplets split screen section. The Gramplets dynamically update this list to correspond with References of the active record. The most drastic difference is the capability to open the editor for these listed items by double-clicking on that row.
  • The Quick View Gramplet is the third & bottomost layer of the stack of windows. It has been configured to select Repository from the View Type pop-up menu and Repository References from the Quick View pop-up menu to show the Reference. And then the Gramplet has been detached by grabbing the Title tab and dragging off the Gramplet split-screen section.

Note that the columns displayed in the Gramplet versus the Quick View are different and vary by Category. In the Repository category, the Category Type and the Gramps ID for each Reference is visible in the Gramplet but not the Quick View. Meanwhile, the Quick Views show additional detailed attributes.

Also note that detached Gramplets have a Help button linked to the appropriate section of the Gramps wiki. This is not accessible unless a Gramplet has been detached.
